Promoting Peaceful Coexistence in Institutions Within Kerio Valley Through AMANI CLUBS

In an effort to foster peace and environmental stewardship among young people in Elgeyo Marakwet County (EMC), Safer World, in partnership with the Catholic Justice and Peace Department (CJPD), initiated the formation of Amani Clubs in schools along the border with West Pokot and Baringo counties Established last year, these clubs have dual objectives: promoting peace and encouraging environmental responsibility among students. The need to expand and strengthen these clubs, especially in high schools, has become increasingly clear, as many young people in the region are vulnerable to involvement in banditry during school breaks, as evidenced by an incident in August 2024 when some students From Marakwet attempted a raid in pokot .This highlights the importance of providing students with platforms like Amani Clubs, where they can engage in conflict resolution, peacebuilding activities, and develop positive approaches to addressing disputes. The clubs not only encourage peace discussions within schools but also facilitate cross-border engagements with peace clubs from neighboring counties through activities such as sports, debates, and music competitions, fostering camaraderie and mutual respect. Additionally, the clubs promote environmental care through initiatives like tree planting and cleanup projects, with many schools implementing their own unique initiatives that contribute to both peacebuilding and environmental conservation.
